FROM LOG TO
READY-TO-SHIP SAWN TIMBER

The production cycle at Sortavala Timber Mill combines raw-material sorting, optimised sawing, kiln drying and finished-product quality control. Every stage is designed to meet order specifications and ensure consistent sawn timber quality.

PRODUCTION SYSTEM
AN INTEGRATED CHAIN —
FROM RAW MATERIAL TO DISPATCH

The subsidiary company Zapkarelles JSC carries out timber-harvesting operations and provides Sortavala Timber Mill with its own timber resource base. Sawlogs are delivered to the production site and sorted by species, length, diameter and technical parameters.

The subsequent production cycle combines raw-material preparation, optimised sawing, green-timber sorting, kiln drying, final quality control, packaging and storage. Coordinated management of these stages enables the mill to produce batches with specified dimensions, moisture content and grade.

STAGE 01
SAWLOG SORTING

Each log undergoes automated measurement and inspection before entering the sawline.

Sawlogs arrive at the production site unsorted. The sorting line identifies the key raw-material characteristics, after which each log is directed to the appropriate sorting bin.

This process creates uniform batches of logs of the same species, length and diameter. Based on the data collected, the process engineer selects the optimal cutting pattern for subsequent processing.

ЭТАП 02
DEBARKING AND SAWMILLING

For each prepared batch of raw material, the optimal cutting pattern is determined based on the log diameter and the required parameters of the finished product.

Logs are fed individually onto the production line, debarked and then processed sequentially using canter and sawing equipment. At the end of the line, sawn timber in the specified cross-sections and lengths is produced.

STAGE 03
GREEN TIMBER SORTING

After sawing and trimming, the sawn timber is transferred to an automated green-timber sorting line.

The equipment measures each piece of sawn timber and directs it to the appropriate sorting bin. Once a sufficient volume of boards with the same cross-section has accumulated, a kiln pack is assembled for subsequent drying.

STAGE 04
KILN DRYING

The assembled kiln packs are loaded into the drying kilns, where the timber’s moisture content is gradually reduced to the required level.

Drying time depends on the wood species, sawn timber thickness and finished-product specifications. A complete cycle takes between 2.5 and 10 calendar days and is continuously monitored by operators.

STAGE 05
FINAL SORTING AND GRADING

After kiln drying, the sawn timber undergoes final processing and quality assessment on the dry-timber sorting line.

At this stage, unacceptable defects are removed, the final length is determined and a grade is assigned. The sawn timber is then sorted by dimensions and quality characteristics before being assembled into finished-product packs.

STAGE 06
PACKAGING AND DISPATCH

The graded sawn timber is transferred to the finished-product area, where boards of the same dimensions and grade are assembled into finished-product packs.

Each pack is pressed, wrapped in protective film and assigned a unique identification number. The products are then placed in storage and prepared for loading into containers or semi-trailers.

COMPREHENSIVE
UTILISATION OF WOOD
Processing sawlogs produces not only sawn timber, but also several other wood-based materials. Each production stream is separated and directed for further use.

Wood chips are screened on two vibrating screens and supplied to RK-Grand, the Basalt Group’s pulp mill.

Bark and fuel chips are used in the mill’s two boiler plants. The heat generated supports the operation of the drying kilns and heats the production buildings.

Sawdust is separated from the wood chips and forms a separate product line.
